Background information

The “Reform of employment and working conditions for doctoral researchers and postdoctoral researchers at the University of Basel” (Mittelbaureform) aims to address long-standing problems faced by the academic mid-level staff. It was launched in autumn 2024.

avuba represents approximately 2,700 doctoral and 500 postdoctoral researchers at the University of Basel, and has been actively involved in the development of the project. On your behalf, avuba advocates for the following at the University of Basel:

• Adherence to contractual workloads and protected research time
• Reduced dependency on superiors by separating recruitment, supervision, and evaluation processes
• Equal preparation of assistants for academic and non-academic careers
• Establishment of permanent academic positions below professorship level
• Compatibility of academic careers with family commitments
• Promotion of high-quality research and sufficient support for funding applications
• Maintenance of good, fair, and healthy working conditions
• Protection of personal integrity
• Guaranteed co-determination rights for assistants
• Integration of international assistants
